Celta Vigo 1 - 1 Valencia CF Match Report

Valencia, looking to add to the 3 points against Real Madrid came into this game full of confidence whereby Celta are having a torrid time trying to get a result with their last win against Barcelona away on November 1st of last year.  However, looking at their results they are obviously a tough side to break down and even though that was the last time they scored a goal, they also keep it very tight at the back and concede very few.

It was the home team that started the strongest and looking more like a team near the top than their visitors.   They moved the ball around well and looked far more comfortable in possession. I was disappointed to see Negredo playing and Javi Fuego sitting in the dugout.  To me it would have been an opportunity to rest Negredo and play Fuego with Enzo Perez in a more attacking roll in place of Parejo. With Piatti and Gaya not available it was left to Andre Gomez to cover the left attacking side.

In the 27th minute an angled ball into the Valencia area saw Charles tackled from behind by Otamendi and although it looked as if the ball had been won cleanly the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. It was rather harsh but any tackle from behind in La Liga is liable to invite a free kick. However, Diego Alves dived to his right to push the penalty from Orellana wide much to the delight and relief of his team mates.
If that wasn't bad enough for the hosts, 3 minutes before the break a mistake in midfield allowed Rodrigo to steal the ball, He ran on and fired in from the edge of the area and fortunately for us the keeper made a bit of a hash of the save to give us the goal advantage. It proves the old saying if you don't shoot you won't score, and that is what the game needed. This is how it stayed until half time with not too much to shout about in the first 45 minutes.

The second period continued as the first with Celta looking the more lively team and on the hour the scores were level.  A corner from the left was headed on by Charles for that man again Orellana to volley home past a bunch of Valencia players to level the score.  I guess it had to come as the home team amassed 11 corners to Valencia's 2.  The law of averages says that sooner or later you will manage to make on count.  Orellana had been giving Orban a torrid evening with his skills but the Valencia man had managed to keep him at bay until then.  The game fizzled out after that with both teams although trying to get the 3 points seemed reasonably happy with a point each.

It was a weary looking Valencia who trudged off at the end but will have to start all over again on Tuesday with a trip to Espanol in the Copa Del Rey.

Player Ratings
Alves 6.5 - Did not really have much to do but had no chance with the goal that went through a number of players
Barragan 5.5 - Not a good night for him contributed little in attack and looked sluggish just when I thought he was looking better recently he seems to have gone backwards tonight.
Mustafi 7 - His usual solid display and as reliable as ever hardly missed a tackle or header
Otamendi 7 - Another solid display and was a little unlucky with the penalty although slightly reckless in his challenge.  Looks like he needs to miss a game to rest but he is too valuable to leave out.
Orban 7 - What a gem of a player we have picked up,  sometimes a bit over enthusiastic, shall we say in his challenges but opponents will know they have been in a game when he marks them.
Gomez 6 - Unusually  quiet night for him apart from a few good runs that unfortunately came to nothing.
Parejo 6.5 - Caught in possession a couple of times but laid of his usual array of pinpoint passes and made some good challenges.
Perez 6.5 - Seemed to be playing in the Fuego role and did OK but I would rather see him in a more forward role with a bit of freedom to use his skills.
Rodrigo 6.5 - He is looking good at times and scored a well deserved goal.  Needs to make better decisions at times in his passing. I would like to see him used as a striker with Paco
Negredo 5.5 - To me he looked right out of it tonight and I am glad it's not my money that is being paid for him. I said before the game he looked tired during the Espanol game. I understand he may have picked up a bad foot injury we will have to wait and see.
Alcacer 6 - Didn't really have any opportunity to score but worked hard,  maybe we will need some more options up the front when things are not happening for us with our strikers. For a team 4th in the league there would normally be a striker with a hat full of goals but we seem to be sharing them out.  Good to see others scoring but we really need more from our front men.
De Paul 6.5- Looked lively when he came on and maybe should have come on earlier to make a difference
Fuego N/A - Not enough time really.
Cancelo N/A - Not enough time

Conclusion ;   2 points dropped I would say rather than one gained,  however a point away from home and Almeria at home next should keep us up with the leaders. We have to be able to raise our game more though against the lower clubs. That is the mark of a top team compared to an average team and we certainly looked average tonight.  But hey tomorrow is another day and we are still near the top
